Kev is from Liverpool , UK. He is married with two children. He trained in medicine in Leeds University Medical School, UK.
He specialized in General Practice initially having gained a wide range of experience in paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, general medicine, infectious diseases accident & emergency and surgery.
Kev developed a special interest interest in psychiatry & psychological medicine in primary care and trained as an adult psychiatrist and then as a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
He was Tutor in Psychiatry to Professor David Sims at The Department of Psychiatry, and research Senior Registrar to Professor David Cottrell in the Academic Unit of Child and Adolescent Mental Health at Leeds University, UK. He gained the Post Graduate Degree of Master of Medical Science Degree in Psychiatry at Leeds University.
Kev has published original research in peer reviewed journals and has also been a medical author contributing articles and chapters.
Prior to emigration to NZ he held a position as Consultant Child Psychiatrist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Leeds University Teaching Hospital.
On in arrival NZ he worked as Clinical Director for Waitemata Health Auckland with a portfolio of services including Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Maternal Mental Health, Early Intervention (Psychosis) Service and Family Therapy .
Kev Appleton and Yvette Ahmad are the founding directors of The Starfish Clinic New Zealand. Kev is Medical Director and Psychiatrist for this service. He has also worked as Visiting Psychiatrist to mental health services throughout New Zealand including Kaupapa Maori services.
He was a member of the New Zealand Guidelines Group for both the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autistic Spectrum Disorders and has a special interest in these areas. He is a medical advisor to ADHD and Autism New Zealand.
He also works as Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist to ProCare Psychological Services.
Kev is a Musician, Skipper of Piver Lodestar and is on call as a Marine Rescue Medic for Whale and Dolphin strandings for The Jonah Project.
